LocumTenens.com Joins Give an Hour in Supporting U.S. Military Troops
As It Fills Psychiatry Jobs, Agency Encourages Physicians to Donate Time
Alpharetta, Ga. (Vocus/PRWEB ) May 16, 2008 — Physician recruiting firm LocumTenens.com has signed on as a financial supporter of Give an Hour (GAH), a nonprofit organization established to provide pro bono mental health services to U.S. military troops and families affected by deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf.

Give an Hour asks mental health professionals nationwide to literally give an hour of their time each week, for a minimum of one year, to provide mental health services through its network of volunteer providers. Though it is not required, GAH offers troops and their loved ones who use the services the opportunity to volunteer in their local communities.
“As an agency that fills hundreds of psychiatry jobs in healthcare facilities across the U.S. each year, we are in a unique position to help Give an Hour recruit physicians into its network,” LocumTenens.com Executive Vice President Michael A. Davis said. “We are pleased to join with Give an Hour to support the hundreds of thousands of soldiers returning from the Middle East with mental health challenges.”
Military Mental Health Crisis
A Rand Corporation study released on April 17 estimates that some 300,000 returning U.S. troops are coping with major depression or post-traumatic stress resulting from their deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and that some 320,000 received brain injuries. In recent months U.S. news media have documented the extent to which the U.S. military is straining to address all the mental health needs through its own resources alone.
In fall 2007, LocumTenens.com began helping the U.S. military meet this challenge under the terms of a five-year contract to fill the equivalent of 18 full-time psychiatry jobs through October 2012 for Walter Reed Army Medical Center and affiliated healthcare facilities. In addition to its financial donation to Give an Hour, the physician recruiting firm now is leveraging its free physician job board at www.LocumTenens.com to encourage psychiatrists to join the pro bono counseling network.
"As mental health professionals, we represent a tremendous resource and now have the opportunity, through Give an Hour, to respond to this clear and obvious need," said Give an Hour Founder and President Barbara Romberg, Ph.D. “We are thrilled to have the support of LocumTenens.com in assisting military personnel, along with their families and friends, in healing the mental scars of war.”
Founded in 1995, LocumTenens.com is a full-service physician/CRNA recruiting firm specializing in anesthesiology jobs, cardiology jobs, psychiatry jobs, radiologist jobs, surgeon jobs and CRNA jobs with U.S. hospitals, medical groups and community health centers.
