All about Telangiectasia

Telangiectasia refers to small, dilated, blood vessels. Spider

angioma of the legs may develop on anyone; with women they often develop during pregnancy, generally diminishing after delivery; however they may never completely disappear. The cause is usually not apparent. Genetic factors may be important. Facial telangiectasias may be related to sun exposure or rosacea.

Medical Treatment: Electrodessication usually eliminates facial telangiectasia. Sclerosing solutions such as hypertonic saline may be used to treat spider veins of the legs. Argon and pulse dye lasers may be used for some lesions.

Cosmetic Treatment: To help the patient camouflage telangiectasias suggest that he or she apply a green color corrector to tone down the red or purple undertones in the skin, set it with translucent powder, and wait ten minutes for it to stabilize before attempting to apply a thicker, more opaque cover to the area.

Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder that involves dilated central facial blood vessels with redness, or redness combined with papules and pustules. Patients with rosacea may have prolonged facial flushing and numerous telangiectasias. Both men and women suffer from rosacea.

Medical Treatment: Antibiotics such as tetracycline or topical metronidazole (metrogel) are the most effective treatment for this skin disorder. Hot drinks, alcohol, and spicy foods should probably be minimized. Occasionally Accutane is used for severe cases.

Cosmetic Treatment: Abrasive exfoliants, scrubs, face masques, or peels can severely aggravate rosacea. Patients should be cautioned to avoid using extremely hot or cold water on their skin when cleansing. To properly instruct patients on the most effective way to camouflage rosacea, advise the patient to first apply a green color corrector, which will neutralize the red and tone it down. Caution patients to avoid trying to completely conceal this condition with thick, oil-based foundations because they will completely rob the skin of its natural coloring and make it look mask-like. A light application of a water-based foundation or a light oil base will make rosacea less obvious and will provide the best camouflage solution.
